Young Peoples Counselling
Young people are under an enormous amount of pressure in the world today. Issues that can weigh heavy on them when life goes out of balance – school, home life and friendships. When all is going well, life can feel balanced and manageable. But, as we know, life happens. Children and young people often have little control about what happens around them and to them.
The impact of parental separation, illness, bereavement, sexual identity or gender issues, bullying, relationship issues can cause anxiety. This may often become overwhelming. Young people often retreat to their rooms. They put their head phones on and stop talking. Without the right sort of help they may turn to harmful ways of coping, making the situation even more complicated.
Statistics taken from the Mental Health Foundation indicate that 70% of young people who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.
It is often very difficult for a child or young person to talk about their difficulties; this can result from not understanding what exactly is happening to them, and therefore not being able to articulate it. They can physically feel something is wrong but they may not have the words to talk through how this is affecting them.
Talking to someone who is not a family member or friend can help enormously. Often, they do not want to talk to anyone from school as they feel it would not be confidential or that teachers would treat them differently. That ‘everyone’ would know they were struggling.
At Serendipity we work with children and young people age 13 upwards. Our qualified and experienced counsellors provide a safe and welcoming space. We work therapeutically to develop a rapport with our clients which allows them to express their feelings in an emotionally regulated way. We work with them to manage difficult feelings through psycho-education and in collaboration to develop a self care and wellbeing toolkit.
We work towards helping your child become more self-aware, leading to better self-care and in the process, learning the language needed in order to talk to those who can help them outside of the counselling room.
